Who is the Artist ?
Joan Hardie - Pyrographer.
Born and raised in Devonshire, England, Joan now lives in rural Somerset, England with her husband George, who likes to play a small part in her work by dealing with the necessary computer work (graphics, literature etc.). However, all of Joan’s Pyrography is produced entirely by hand.
The aim is to promote Pyrography as an accepted Art Form through Teaching, Demonstrating and offering Talks to organised groups.
Unfortunately many people do not realise what Pyrography is and she hopes to be able to show it for the delicate and fascinating medium that it undoubtedly is.
Some years ago Joan pondered over uses for a slice from a Poplar tree and thought it would make a nice house sign. Little did she realise then that it would lead her into the world of international Pyrography. She is now a full member of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen
She taught herself to use the burning tools, and to enjoy creating pictures of wildlife, especially birds and fish. Rural scenes past and present also lend themselves to the fine detail which typifies the craft and shows it to it’s best advantage.
A variety of hard woods can be employed including, Sycamore, Lime, Maple and Beech.
Joan started with a Janik solid point Pyrography machine although she now has a collection of machines, including her favourite Davan, which she recommends to others.
